LADY'S ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Remember the baby that was delivered by firefighters at the fire station last week? On Wednesday morning, the proud parents and grandparents presented those firefighters with a special plaque for all of their hard work.
The baby's mother, Elena Poyster, said she knew she wasn't going to be able to make it to the hospital in time and made her mother pull over to the fire station. Within minutes firefighters delivered the healthy baby boy, Austin Poyster, and then EMS took the mother and baby to the hospital.
“They're really great people, awesome, awesome.” says proud parents Joey and Elena Poyster.
"I just have no words to express how grateful we were to the firemen," said Lynn Hopkins.
Four firefighters in all helped deliver the baby last Thursday morning. Unbelievably, this was actually the sixth delivery for one of the firemen involved in the delivery.
"Our main concern that morning was making sure that the baby and mom were in great shape and we handed them off to Beaufort County EMS, they were doing great," said Firefighter John Norton, who delivered the baby. "It's just an honor to see them again, see how the hard work payed off."
“The Lady's Island firefighters here were just stellar in communicating. They had someone on the radio that was telling us everything that was going on as it was happening and it was a text book delivery of a child in the parking lot. It couldn't have been any better.” stated Mike Wampker with Beaufort County EMS.
