Fire breaks out at Beaufort restaurant overnight

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC)- Fire crews responded to an overnight fire at Beaufort restaurant Tuesday.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. at the La Nopalera restaurant on Ribaut Road in Beaufort.

Fire officials say they believe the fire broke out in the shed that is located in the back of the restaurant. At this time there is no known cause. Luckily, no injuries were reported.

The fire is out but crews remain on scene to monitor hot spots and look into the cause.

The fire is under investigation.

Beaufort County unemployment rate drops to 6.1 percent

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC)- The unemployment rate in Beaufort County has dropped.

The county's rate is now 6.1 percent after 418 jobs were
added last month. The 0.4 percent decrease is due to seasonal hiring as tourism season begins.

Beaufort has the 5th lowest unemployment rate in South
Carolina. The state rate is 8 percent.

Whale Branch Middle School honors student with oyster reef

SEABROOK, SC (WTOC)- Seventh graders at Whale Branch Middle School are honoring their classmate, Norman Kirkland, by making an oyster reef on the Whale Branch River.

Kirkland drowned in the Ashepoo River in Colleton County Sunday.

"It was Norman who really liked to go outdoors and work on the marsh," said Adrian Manigo, student. "He was really an outdoorsman."

That is the reason Manigo and his other classmates decided to name it Kirkland's Reef.

According to Kirkland's former teacher, Kathryn Madden, Kirkland was very dedicated to the environment.
